Sponsor a student

We are delighted to have been able to commit to sponsoring 30 young people for places at secondary school for 2024. The Fundo Foundation has covered the fees needed for Terms 1 and 2, but we need your help to pay for Term 3 and beyond for future years, so that each of them can continue with and complete their secondary education. Can you help us to do this by signing up to sponsor one of these young people?

Just £1 per day

For £30 per month, you can open up the opportunity for a young person to go to secondary school.

Or for £10 per month, you can sponsor 10 children at Fundo Primary to receive a daily school meal.

You will receive an information pack about the student you are sponsoring, and updates on the progress they are making with their education. This could be such a rewarding experience for you, and if you have children in your family, so beneficial for them to share in and learn about the school life of someone in a very different context to their own. If you sign up, you will be allocated one of the students and we will send you information about them, their school and their family.

Molly's Story

Molly's son is being sponsored through The Foundation Foundation to attend Manibe Secondary School. They live in Fundo and he went to Fundo School.

Molly attended Fundo Skills Training Program in tailoring. She did very well and due to her commitment, she was appointed as the school tailor and leader of the tailoring group. She borrowed a sewing machine so that she could start a small business at home, and began to save some money to purchase her own machine and support her son at school. With support from friends in Germany and at Tonbridge Methodist Church, we were able to top up her savings so that she could purchase a sewing machine and invest in the business.

Last year, her son was selected for secondary school sponsorship. His scholastic materials came out of the family's savings, and the school fees were met through sponsorship.

Molly said, “Thank you for giving this opportunity. Without your help, my son would have been wasted here in the village. You can now see for yourself, he is a very good and responsible boy. He is very helpful at home and respects us. Now his brother has joined him. We are now growing cassava and sesame to raise more funds for their school needs. Even our other children at Fundo Primary have received scholastic materials through your help. We are very motivated to educate our children. I get money by mending people’s clothes with the sewing machine. I save 1,000 (30p) or more every day for our children’s fees. Without you help for education our family would not even afford to send our children to secondary school.”

Can you help families like Molly's to be able to afford to send their children to secondary school?

Primary schools are free at source for children in Uganda but it costs money to attend Secondary School.  Over 300 pupils typically start Fundo Primary School in P1 but there may only be around 20 still at school by the senior class (P7). Of these, only a handful graduate from P7, having passed the necessary exams to attend Secondary School. For a child who is successful in getting to P7 and passing these exams, the next hurdle is finding the necessary fees to attend a secondary school, and the nearest one is a two-hour drive in the nearest town of Arua.

It costs approximately £200 per term for secondary education, including school fees, transport, medical check-ups and materials for learning (£600 per year for one child). In a country where the average annual income is £1,680, and many earn far below this, it is not difficult to understand how this is a limiting factor for attending secondary school. Sponsoring a child to attend a secondary school enables an individual the opportunity to continue their education when they might otherwise have dropped out of school during or after primary school. The alternative for many of these may be marriage and pregnancy or drug and alcohol abuse, with few employment opportunities. If you think you could help support children from Fundo Primary School to go on to secondary education through regular giving, please complete the form below. Thank you.
