A sustainable water supply
Fixing the water pump in Fundo
In March 2023, two broken pipes and three pump buckets were replaced and the children at Fundo School are now able to get clean water, along with the families living in this community. However, this is only a temporary solution. We are looking to purchase a solar-powered pump and water tank reserve to upgrade the system and give reliable access to clean water in this community all-year round. The water situation, hunger and sickness are some of the reasons children are not regularly in school.
If you would like contribute towards the purchase and installation of the new pump and water tank, please visit the Giving page. Thank you.
One of the most difficult experiences was seeing the children crowding round the rain water tank at Fundo school, only to find it was empty. They were trying to get just a dribble of water to come out if possible. During the dry season, this rain water supply runs out very quickly, and it can be several months until it rains and fills up again. None of the children had water bottles, and for many of them it would be a 2km walk home and back to get a drink of water. Water is a basic necessity and absolutely needed for children to be able to learn and for teachers to be able to teach.
The two existing rain water tanks on the school site are currently one, and one is being used by the school with the other providing water for families at home. We would like to install a third tank to further safeguard against water shortages in the dry seasons and to ensure there is enough water for the local community as well as the children during their school day.
