A sustainable water supply
Fixing the water pump in Fundo
There is a well and water pump in Fundo which gives the community access to clean water. However, the system is unrelaible an in frequent need of repair. In March 2023, two broken pipes and three pump buckets were replaced so that the children at Fundo School are able to get clean water. A lack of drinking water, hunger and sickness are some of the reasons children are not regularly in school.
Two new water tanks
On a team visit to Fundo in 2023, one of the most difficult experiences was seeing the children crowding round the rain water tank at Fundo school, only to find it was empty. They were trying to get a dribble of water to come out if possible. During the dry season, this rain water supply runs out very quickly, and it can be several months until it rains and fills up again. None of the children had water bottles, and for many of them it would be a trek back home or to the village well to get a drink of water, missing most of the school day in the process. Water is a basic necessity and absolutely needed for children to be able to learn and for teachers to be able to teach.
The water supply from the two existing tanks on the school site is not enough to last for the dry season in Uganda. They are used by the school and for families at home. We have plans in 2025 to install two further tanks to increase the supply and safeguard against water shortages, ensuring that the children at the school have access to clean drinking water all year round.
